Sail for Valhalla

Sail for Valhalla is the chapter where the war-band leaves. It is the third single by VARGA, the Nordic duo behind Neo Viking Rock Trap, and in the story it comes after the oath — a longship pulling out of a fjord at first light, a promise made on the shore, and a single sail going small against cold water.

They had sworn in the dark. Now it was morning, and an oath in daylight is only a debt.

The ship had been dragged down the shingle in the night so the village would not have to watch it go. That was a kindness nobody had asked for. The village watched anyway. They came down in ones and twos with their arms folded against the cold, and they stood above the tideline and said nothing, because there was nothing to say that had not already been said badly.

Sixty feet of green oak. Shields ranked along the gunwale, painted and repainted, most of them older than the people who carried them. A dragon at the prow with salt in its teeth.

Both of them went aboard. That is worth saying plainly, because people assume otherwise: this is not a story where one of them fights and the other one waves. Stori came down the shingle with her shield on her back and went over the side like everyone else, and took a bench, and rowed.

Nobody made a speech. Anyone who needs a speech to leave has not decided to.

The leaving is the part the song is about, and it is the part people get wrong. They think it is about the two of them. It is not. It is about the forty people on the beach who are not going, and who now have to keep a place alive without the strongest hands in it, through a winter, on the chance that a sail comes back. The promise on the shore is made to them. That is why it costs something.

They caught the ebb. That is the whole of it. There was no horn, no signal, nothing you could put in a painting. The rowers found the stroke and the water changed its mind about the hull and the ship simply began to be further away than it had been.

It takes a long time for a ship to leave. That is what nobody tells you. It is not a moment. It is an hour of a shape getting smaller while the people on the beach decide, over and over, not to shout.

The fjord is narrow at the mouth. There is a place where the cliffs close in and the water goes black and the wind drops out of the sail for a hundred yards, and every crew that has ever rowed it has felt the same thing: that the land is thinking about it. That it could still be reconsidered.

They rowed through. They always row through.
